The Great Reboot: Succeeding In A World Of Catastrophic Risk And Opportunity
In the event of a civil transportation accident, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will immediately send a Go Team. This is a team of specialists that are on call to go at a moment’s notice to the accident site. They will often arrive at the accident site early on, such that the wreckage is still smoldering, victims unidentified, and there are endless questions and few answers.
I thought of the NTSB as I was reading the just-released monograph The Great Reboot: Succeeding In A World Of Catastrophic Risk And Opportunity by Bob Zukis, Paul Ferrillo, and Chris Veltsos. As the world is still smoldering in the wreckage known as the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors take the role of the Go Team in this interesting read to show a way out of the disaster.
The book’s main thesis is that notwithstanding the death and destruction that COVID-19 has wrought in the business world and economy, it is a time of incredible opportunity. The great reboot in the title refers to the new methods and ideas that businesses must use to get out of the pandemic alive. The massive changes that COVID-19 brought also bring large-scape opportunities.
The NTSB identifies ways to make transportation safer out of the ashes of deadly accidents. Here too, the authors identify new ways of thinking to emerge from the fatal COVID-19 path safely.
The authors write about many of the complex systems that make up our economy and IT systems. The book helps business leaders understand the complexity of their systems and operations to help them deal with the post-pandemic changes that will emerge. As the pandemic will create new markets, needs, and wants, business leaders must understand these catalysts.
In much of the book, the authors use the STEEPLED strategic planning tool. Similar to SWOT analysis, STEEPLED is a more advanced approach as it includes other environmental external factors such as demographics, ethical, environmental, and more. Their focus in the book is to apply this and other principles to the complex digital business systems that power the world, to drive a post-pandemic reboot.
As we are still in the midst of COVID-19 and likely to see a second wave, the time is nonetheless now for business leaders to dispatch their Go Teams. In The Great Reboot, the authors make you think about the significant opportunities that lie ahead.
In 150-pages, the authors provide the initial steps to get out of the wreckage known as COVID-19, and onto the safer and profitable opportunities that lie ahead.
