I wrote that Facebook doesn’t care about security — I was wrong.

In 2023, I wrote that Facebook doesn’t care about security or fraud. Let me be the first to admit that I was wrong. After rethinking things, speaking with others, and recent interactions with Facebook, I realized that Meta not only doesn’t care about security, but they actively run roughshod over it.

Facebook has become a cesspool, and scammers almost flood the site as much as people share pictures of their cats.

A common occurrence is attackers taking over an account and sharing videos with taglines like “I can’t believe he’s gone” and “look who died.” People invariably click on these links, which lead to malware sites. Yet my alerting people to this was flagged and blocked numerous times.

The irony is that for many of these, I identified accounts that scammers took over and used links to share malware. Yet somehow, in a cybersecurity alternative world, this is a violation.
